German Government WASCAL Scholarship 2025

West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use in partnership with the German Government sponsors the WASCAL Scholarship for international students from African countries.
This is a fully funded scholarship which is hosted in Germany, Ghana, Cape Verde and Burkina Faso, where selected students get to pursue their postgraduate studies. The WASCAL Scholarship covers the students full tuition fees, provides monthly stipends and accommodation.
The West African Science Service Centre on Climate Change and Adapted Land Use (WASCAL) Scholarship is open to students from 12 West African countries to undertake PhD and Master’s programmes in an effort to continue to address the urgent need for climate resilience in West Africa. Germany’s Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), along with renowned German universities are supporting the programmes.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applicant must be a citizen of a WASCAL member country (Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, Guinea Conakry, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, The Gambia or Togo);
- Other ECOWAS member countries may be admitted as self-funded students on an availability basis.
- Applicant must hold a BSc degree (second class upper division) or equivalent in a relevant field.
- Applicant must have at least an intermediate level proficiency in English language.
Benefits of Scholarship

The WASCAL Scholarship will provide recipients with full tuition fee coverage. It will provide monthly stipend to cover accommodation, and living expenses for the period of studies. There will also be roundtrip tickets to travel to selected West African countries as well as to Germany. Additionally, beneficiaries will get a personal laptop computer on loan and research budget for the duration of the programme.

- WASSCE or SSCE Certificate (Anglophone Countries)
- Two letters of recommendation from professors or researchers (grade associate professor or senior researcher at least).
- Certificate copy of proficiency in English or, in alternative, a statement indicating and justifying your self-assessment in the context of English proficiency.
- Proof of professional experience in relevant area for the course, If applicable.
- A written commitment to pay a registration fee of 30 Euro if admitted.
Application Procedure
- Go to the WASCAL scholarship portal
- Choose one of the available Masters or Doctoral programs.
- Download and complete the application form
- Prepare required documents (make sure to follow the guidelines for naming each document as stated in each guideline).
- Submit your application as soon as possible by email to the appropriate WASCAL address.
- Shortlisted candidates will be invited for interviews.
